Theodor Adorno’s 1949 essay Cultural Criticism and Society ends with the infamous pronouncement that “To write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric.” And yet art, in its many forms, may well be the only language capable of responding to Auschwitz, to Buchenwald — right here on our doorstep — and all the horrors of the Holocaust.

Curator and Visiting Professor at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Rachel Rits-Volloch invites the eminent curator and art historian Amnon Barzel to discuss his experience as the first Director of Berlin’s Jewish Museum — an institution whose birth, and extremely long gestation, was the contested product of the innumerable public debates on the most appropriate form of commemoration of the Holocaust in German society. As the Founding Director of two museums, and the curator of countless international exhibitions, Barzel delves into the vast breadth of his experience to address issues of museology, curatorship, and the creation of sites of commemoration.
