Christine Hill will discuss her ongoing research project Small Business as part of her investigations within
her production label Volksboutique as well as the research conducted via her professorship at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

Hill is the proprietor of Volksboutique, a forum for discussing industry and labor, transactional exchange and production. Founded in 1996 in Berlin in the guise of a second-hand store, its inclusion in documenta Xin 1997 introduced the project to a broader audience.

Volksboutique has authored numerous performative installations serving as alternative business models/proposals commissioned by museums, biennials and galleries since its inception. Volksboutique examines concepts of cultural “value” and points viewers attention to specific objects and events that risk being overlooked as being too quotidian or too common. As a self-declared hobby archivist and librarian, Hill’s governing interest is in defining select arenas where art should be lived.
