Artist as Ombudsman

The ombudsman exists as a quasi-independent agent who can publicize and address the grievances of individuals against a power structure. One role of the ombudsman is to create a platform for dissent for minority voices. In her participatory art projects, Monica Sheets takes on the role of the ombudsman, creating platforms for communication as a means of civic engagement for herself and other participants. She will present a selection of her work that explores the artist’s function as go-between or facilitator, including Das Fundbuero, an ongoing project that creates a space for expressing ambivalent and/or contradictory feelings about the German Democratic Republic.
