The Good Practice Salo(o)n is a discursive format within the PhD programme Art and Design that deals with questions around good practice in practice-based research. The atmosphere can range between the cultivated conversation in a salon, the noisy conviviality and conflict potential of a saloon, and the nurturing banter of a beauty salon.This edition is dedicated to the topic of final theses. We ask: What makes a practice-based dissertation great?

The dissertation marks the end of each PhD project. It represents years of research, experiments and findings, but also years of doubt, failure and moments of success. In view of the variety of approaches to practice-based research, the question arises as to what form a practice-based dissertation can - or should - take. It is supposed to reflect the practical and theoretical parts of the research work in equal measure. Does this requirement restrict the freedom of (practice-based) research, or is this kind of restriction necessary in order to test the boundaries?

There will be impulse statements by Alex Toland (head of the PhD Programme) and Peter Benz (president of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar), followed by an open - and hopefully lively! - discussion. We welcome your thoughts, ideas, and criticism.

Der Good Practice Salo(o)n ist ein diskursives Format im PhD-Programm Kunst und Design, in dem es um gute Praxis praxisbasierter Forschung geht. Die Atmosphäre kann zwischen der kultivierten Konversation eines Salons, der lauten Geselligkeit und dem Konfliktpotenzial eines Saloons und dem pflegenden Geplänkel eines Schönheitssalons liegen. Dieses Mal widmet sich der Salo(o)n dem Thema der Dissertation. Wir fragen: Was macht eine praxisorientierte Dissertation richtig gut?

Die Dissertation markiert das Ende eines jeden Promotionsprojekts. Sie steht für Jahre der Forschung, der Experimente und Erkenntnisse, aber auch für Jahre des Zweifels, des Scheiterns und der Erfolgsmomente. Angesichts der Vielfalt von Ansätzen praxisbasierter Forschung stellt sich die Frage, welche Form eine praxisbasierte Dissertation annehmen kann - oder sollte. Sie soll die praktischen und theoretischen Anteile der Forschungsarbeit gleichermaßen widerspiegeln. Schränkt diese Vorgabe die Freiheit der (praxisbasierten) Forschung ein, oder ist eine solche Einschränkung notwendig, um die Grenzen auszuloten?

Es wird Impuls-Statements von Alex Toland (Leiter des PhD-Programms) und Peter Benz (Präsident der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar) geben, gefolgt von einer offenen – und hoffentlich lebhaften! – Diskussion. Wir freuen uns auf eure Gedanken, Ideen und Kritik.
