Imperial Spectacles

Painting, Performance and Vision: Rajkamal Kahlon’s performative talk will focus on the enactment of her work’s structure. Shifting - between a personal and subjective voice and a theoretical and archival one, the artist will trace her past projects beginning with a discussion of W.E.B. Du Bois’ idea of Double Consciousness. Questioning the limits of Cartesian Dualism and the Western philosophical privileging of a disembodied vision, the talk reconsiders European painting and Western perspectivalism against the colonial subjects represented in European and American imperial archives. Using spatial and temporal disruptions through a displacement of text and images, Kahlon’s work insists on linking past visual -archives and present imperial image productions.
